At Farsons, sustainability is a responsibility we take seriously. As a leading beverage business operating in a resource-intensive industry, we are transparent in our goal to reduce emissions, protect resources and ensure a greener, more resilient business model for future generations by continuously investing in cleaner energy, smarter processes, and circular solutions.
This section focuses on the Environmental (E) in ESG.
Since 2022, Farsons has significantly improved energy intensity across operations, through smarter equipment, heat recovery, and system upgrades.
These results reflect our commitment to decarbonisation and long-term operational efficiency:
Thermal energy use dropped by 20%, from 124.07 to 99.43 kWh/hl
Electricity use improved from 10.41 to 8.81 kWh/hl
Combined energy intensity reduced by 19%
CO₂ emissions per hectolitre decreased from 5.28 kg to 4.45 kg
*2024 figures, compared to 2022
We are rapidly scaling up our use of clean energy.
Our latest solar installation - an 835 kWp system on the roof of the new Logistics Centre - spans 5,600 m² and generates 1.2 million kWh of electricity annually.
The percentage of renewable electricity rose from 4.96% (2022) to 16.25% (2024) of our total requirements and we are on track to reach and exceed 25% by 2026.
Water is our most essential and vulnerable resource. At Farsons, 99% of the water used is sourced from the municipal supply and treated to exacting standards.
We have also implemented an extensive water recovery system with water efficiency tracked weekly and reported monthly to ensure continuous improvement:
Water use reduced from 2.91 hl per hl produced (2022) to 2.80 hl per hl produced (2024)
Recovery of water from several processes, including can and bottle rinsing and during the filtration process
Recovery of condensate water generated during production is re-used to generate more steam required at various stages of the production processes
This strict policy has been in place for a number of years and supports our consideration for Malta's scarce natural water availability
We embrace a circular model in which packaging never becomes waste.
We are committed to continue to increase the preference for refillable bottles and kegs by trade and consumers.
Introduced in Malta in 2022 the scheme has surpassed collection and reycling targets.
We are increasing the use of recycled PET (rPET) across our single-serve bottles, reducing our reliance on virgin plastic and supporting a circular packaging model.
At Farsons, sustainability is a responsibility we take seriously. As a leading food and beverage business operating in a resource-intensive industry, we want to be transparent in our goal to continuously invest in cleaner energy, smarter processes, and circular solutions.
