Hopleaf Pale Ale revives its legacy with bold new look

06 Oct 2025 / Press Releases

Hopleaf, one of Malta's most iconic beer brands, has unveiled a bold rebrand designed to reconnect with its proud brewing heritage while inspiring a new generation of beer lovers. The refreshed identity aims to broaden its appeal among younger drinkers, expatriates, and tourists seeking a distinctive British-style ale with deep Maltese roots.

First introduced to Malta in 1875 by renowned UK brewers H & G Simonds, Hopleaf quickly became a favourite among the British Crown Forces stationed on the island. Its signature red hop leaf emblem spread across military outposts and pubs throughout the Empire, making the brand a global symbol of quality ale.

In 1929, the merger of H & G Simonds with the Farrugia family's brewing operations laid the foundations for today's Simonds Farsons Cisk plc, cementing Hopleaf's role as a pioneer in Malta's beer culture. By the mid-20th century, Hopleaf Pale Ale stood as a dominant player in the local market before consumer preferences gradually shifted towards lagers. Today, Hopleaf is reclaiming its place at the forefront of Malta's beer scene.

"With refreshed branding and a renewed focus on quality and tradition, Hopleaf is embracing its next chapter," said Karl Bondin, Head of Marketing. "We're reconnecting with the brand's legacy while inviting a new generation to raise a glass to its enduring story."

The rebrand introduces cleaner, modern packaging that retains the iconic red hop leaf, a symbol instantly recognisable to generations of beer drinkers.

Hopleaf Session Pale Ale is available nationwide in 25cl returnable glass bottles and 50cl cans.
