The Brewhouse and Trident Park project wins overall Judge Maurice Caruana Curran Prize

The Brewhouse and Trident Park project has been awarded the overall Judge Maurice Caruana Curran Award at the Din L-Art Ħelwa XVII Architectural Heritage Awards Competition held last week. The project also won the Prix d’Honneur for the Regeneration of an Area category.

The coveted Judge Maurice Caruana Curran Award, named after Din l-Art Ħelwa’s founder, is awarded to the best winner overall in all categories. The project is judged on the quality of the work executed, its historic, cultural, educational and social relevance, the preliminary research conducted and the aesthetic and visual merit. The project may be on a scale ranging from small to large and displays a standard of work which would be outstanding in a Maltese context.

“We are truly honoured and delighted to receive this award from Din l-Art Ħelwa,” commented Mr Michael Farrugia, Director of both Simonds Farsons Cisk plc and Trident Estates plc, and deputy CEO of the Farsons beverage business. “To us at Farsons, the brewery site has always been much more than just a building, it is a symbol of our deep passion for brewing and brands, of our rich history and industrial heritage, our committed workforce and the community we proudly continue to serve.”

This prestigious award follows the announcement of the project also being declared Regional Finalist in the 2024 UK Civic Trust Awards.

The Architectural Heritage Awards Competition was launched by NGO Din l-Art Ħelwa to encourage and motivate architectural best practice and is carried out each year with the support of the Kamra tal-Periti. There are three categories for project submissions: the regeneration of an area; the adaptation of historical buildings to new uses; and the restoration and/or conservation of buildings. Projects can relate either to a single building, a complex of buildings, or to a historic urban environment or townscape.

The award was presented to Mr Michael Farrugia, Director of Simonds Farsons Cisk plc and Trident Estates plc, and deputy CEO of the Farsons beverage business, by Ms Simone Mizzi, daughter of the late Founder and President of Din l-Art Helwa, Judge Maurice Caruana Curran, after whom the award is named.
