Qormi Wasps RFC – a new team in the local rugby scene 11/24/2009

Qormi Wasps RFC

Qormi Wasps RFC was the idea of a few old Sharks players and coaches who felt that the club needed re-branding and rebuilding. A new club with a new committee, new coaching staff and a lot of new players was set up to bring a new image to the locality and the club.

The facelift to the club began with a new name, WASPS, which in the rugby world, is a renowned name associated with the history of London Wasps RFC in the Guinness Premiership in the UK. The name was also chosen to coincide with the philosophy of the club of being old school rugby with all its great traditions. Research into the history of Qormi found that there was a basketball team called Wasps many years ago and what true fitting name it is with the colours of Qormi being yellow and black.

The next step was to select and bring on board the members of the committee and staff, with Stanley Newbold asked to be President which he accepted with great honour after seeing the hard work already being put into the structure and foundations of the club. Stanley is an ex-South African U19's national player so this is indeed a great opportunity for the club to have Stanley's services on board.

Following Stanley's acceptance for the President’s role, the Treasurer and Home Bar to the club, Victor Camilleri (Caccu Social Club) was appointed with Maggie West as Club Secretary.

Head Coach Sam Ramage who has 22 years experience in the game, was appointed in June and is currently recruiting players to his already growing youth U17's section and senior squad whilst continuing to coach and keeping an eye on upcoming talent of players during the weekend games.

Assistant coach Anthony Micallef was brought on board as a defense coach, which, together with his role of Development Officer for the Malta Football Rugby Union, is a huge aspect in the game.

On 15th June the club officially became Qormi Wasps RFC after a general meeting was held with all the players and staff including representatives from the Malta Rugby Football Union to oversee the changeover.

Qormi Wasps RFC have a firm belief that the traditions of this wonderful game are to be upheld at all times on and off the pitch which is why the club introduced a code of conduct for all its members which has been duly signed and accepted.

The club would like to thank all of its sponsors and supporters for taking on a crucial part of the rebuilding and re-branding: Budweiser, Heritage Insurance Management, Qormi Council, Cape Holdings Ltd, Caccu Social Club, Team Sport and The Shelter Wine Bar & Bistro.
