Publife, an internationally acclaimed hit show, will be presented for the first time in Malta by the award winning UK Company, Protein Dance. The performances will be held on the 26, 27 and 28 February 2004. Protein Dance is being brought to Malta by the British Council in collaboration with Koperattiva Kulturali Universitarja (KKU), St James Cavalier, Cisk Lager, and The Sense Group.
The MITP theatre in St Christopher Street, Valletta, will be designed in a traditional British Pub. Publife is choreographed and directed by Luca Silvestrini and Bettina Strickler and music is arranged by Simon Redfern.. The dance-drama performance will caricature social anxiety and observe extreme behaviour towards drinking and pub culture. The show starts at 8.30pm but the bar opens at 8.00pm
Publife was first performed in 2002 with sell out performances in the UK, Germany, Italy and the United States. Publife is normally performed in a real bar and it reduces the physical and emotional distance between performer and spectator. The audience is asked to observe and judge the ups and downs of six people caught in their nightly quest for fun.
Protein Dance Company was founded in 1997 by Italian dancer Luca Silvestrini and Swiss dancer and choreographer Bettina Strickler. Winners of the Jerwood Choreography Award and the Bonnie Bird Award in 2000, they are currently Choreographers in Residence at The Place.
The dance company consists of six dancers and their work blends humour, text and music with idiosyncratic movement reflecting the absurdity of everyday life. Protein Dance works with both professional and non-professional performers in theatrical and non-theatrical spaces in UK and Europe.
Protein’s trademark blend of insightful observation, accessible dance, high drama and humour, plus guest appearances by local “extras” – Publife promises to be an evening out to be remembered.
