FAT Bastard is here 5/21/2010

The FAT Bastard range of wines

FAT Bastard wines have just been launched in Malta. These wines, which come from the Languedoc region of Southern France, have taken the world by storm over the last 10 years, quickly becoming the number one selling French Chardonnay and Shiraz in the United States.

FAT Bastard was created – almost by accident – by Thierry Boudinaud, a renowned French winemaker who had crafted wines from California to France, from Chile to South Africa, and his good friend Guy Anderson, a rebel in the British wine industry, who believes that wine drinkers want quality in their wines but hate the “traditional intimidation heaped on them by most of the wine industry”.  It started out as an experiment Thierry had been doing in the back of his cellar, leaving a barrel ‘on the lees’ (yeast cells). He didn’t know what to expect, but when the friends tried the wine Thierry exclaimed “now zat iz what you call eh Phet bast-ard!” This very British expression perfectly described the wine’s wonderful colour and round, rich palate so that’s what they called it.

Thierry describes FAT Bastard as “a serious brand that does not take itself too seriously. Our philosophy is one of ‘living large’ – enjoying the good life with good food and good wine. We source grapes from several vineyards throughout the Languedoc region, ensuring a consistent style and excellent quality for each FAT Bastard varietal, vintage after vintage.”

No one remembers exactly where the hippo came from.

The FAT Family of wines, which includes a Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and Rosé, is distributed and marketed by FBIC Limited, a member of The Farsons Group.
