The WHOPPER turns 50 12/19/2007

America’s favourite hamburger is 50 and fabulous. First off a hot broiler in 1957, the Whopper sandwich has become an iconic burger for the ages and boasts generations of fans worldwide. What began as a flame-broiled favourite now serves as the ultimate symbol of consumer customization, empowering people everywhere to ‘HAVE IT YOUR WAY’.

From its humble beginnings in a Miami restaurant, Burger King Corp’s signature sandwich today embodies pop culture cool, preceding The Rolling Stones and outliving The Beatles, the Rat Pack and drive-in movie theatres. Today, the Whopper graces menu boards in 69 countries and is set to celebrate its half-century reign.

The Whopper sandwich made its debut in America on March 4, 1957, when Burger King Corp founders David Edgerton and James McLamore concocted a burger of unrivalled size and taste in their original Miami restaurant.

Today, Whopper lovers take full advantage of Burger King Corp’s ‘HAVE IT YOUR WAY’ promise. From adding cheese to holding the onions, more than half of the 1.3 billion Whopper sandwiches sold every year are made especially for each customer.

“I could never imagine not serving the Whopper in any of the Burger King outlets,” said Marco Debono, Marketing Executive for Burger King in Malta. “The Whopper was served in Malta for the first time on 1st June 1995 and since then has become an all-time favourite burger among loyal Burger King customers.”

The original Whopper sandwich comes with a quarter-pound beef patty, toasted sesame seed bun, mayonnaise, fresh lettuce, fresh tomatoes, pickles, ketchup and sliced onions. Cheese or Bacon can also be added on order.

Different promotional varieties have appeared throughout the years for a limited time, such as the Texas Whopper, Ultimate Whopper or the top-seller Western Whopper. Today, the Whopper is cooked to order so that the freshness and taste of all ingredients are kept alive until one unwraps the packaging and starts eating.

Due to the popularity of the Whopper, several competitors have attempted to create a Whopper-like burger. “None of the products launched on the market have been as successful as the Whopper. This clearly indicates the quality and great taste of the Whopper,” concluded Mr Debono.

For this special occasion, Burger King Malta is offering discounted vouchers with every Whopper Meal purchased during the month of December (until stocks last) to be used with the next visit at any of the Burger King outlets in Sliema, Valletta and Paceville.

Burger King is operated in Malta by Food Chain (Holdings) Limited, a subsidiary company of The Farsons Group of Companies.
