Farsons beers today and yesterday

The full flavour and aroma of Farsons beers today are identical to those it brewed in the days of the British Empire. Of course, the technology used has changed, but Farsons prides itself in making beer "as it used to be", keeping to the same proven recipes and retaining the same ingredients as those used in days gone by. This helps explain why many of those who savour Farsons beers describe them as "distinctive", and having a bit more "character" than many other beers on sale today.

All it takes is a sip of any Farsons beer, and the difference is noticeable.

The Cisk Heritage

The brand that most epitomises the Farsons brewery is the award-winning CISK range of lagers. The renowned Cisk brand traces its origins back to the early 1900s when it was first produced by the Malta Export Brewery and subsequently became the top selling Farsons beer locally and abroad, and Gold Medal winner of the "World Beer Cup" in 2002. No wonder it has been described as tasting like "sunshine in a bottle" and "a little gem of a lager".

Today Cisk is available in two distinctive formats - the traditional Cisk Lager still brewed to the original recipe with 4.2% alcohol, and Cisk Export Premium Lager with 5% ABV but the same great Cisk taste.

» CISK LAGER (ABV 4.2%)

Cisk Lager, launched in Malta in 1928, is a golden-coloured, bottom-fermented lager with a distinctive and well-balanced character. Its rich hop aroma and pleasant bitterness, combined with a mild astringency, make it an outstanding thirst-quencher. Its alcohol content is 4.2%.

Cisk Lager was awarded a prestigious second placing in the International Lager Competition category, Class 1, of The Brewing Industry International Awards 2005. These awards are popularly known as the "oscars of the brewing industry", and were previously known as The Burton Competition.

» CISK EXPORT PREMIUM LAGER (ABV 5.0%)

Cisk Premium Lager Beer, also known as Cisk Export, is a premium lager beer with the all-natural ingredients that create the original Cisk character and is produced to continental requirements resulting in a smooth-tasting premium lager of excellent quality.

Cisk Export is a bottom-fermented beer distinguished by its light golden colour and its lively, dense, white head. Its well-balanced character resulting from its rich hop aroma and delicate astringency, make it a smooth, exceptional beer. Its alcohol content is 5%.

In 2002, Cisk Export won two major international awards in the space of a week: Gold Medal in the European Style Pilsner category of the World Beer Cup 2002 held by the Association of Brewers in the United States, and Gold Award in the International Section of the prestigious Australian International Beer Awards. In winning these two awards, Cisk Export competed against some of the leading brands from Europe, Asia, America and Australia.

Hopleaf Pale Ale is a Farsons Classic Brew produced since 1928. Brewed with high quality malt and traditional English hops it has a strong, fresh character with a pleasant bitterness with 3.8% alcohol content. A true India Pale Ale, brewed today as it was in 1928 using the same ingredients and meeting the same exacting standards. Enjoyed by millions of civilian, naval and military visitors to Malta since the days of King George V.

» HOPLEAF EXTRA (ABV 5.0%)

Brewed with the all-natural ingredients that create the original Hopleaf Pale Ale character, Hopleaf Extra is a powerful beer with a full-bodied flavour and 5% alcohol. Hopleaf Extra is characterised by a well-balanced brew, strong in roasted malt with a medium hoppy bitterness. It is a powerful, yet smooth premium ale whose 'Hopleaf' origins date back to the days of the British Empire when hundreds of thousands of soldiers and sailors stationed in or passing through Malta quenched their thirst with this authentic India Pale Ale.

» BLUE LABEL ALE (ABV 3.3%)

Blue Label Ale, one of the Farsons Classic Brews was first launched in 1928. Locals and foreigners alike immediately appreciated the high quality of this beer and by 1952 Blue Label was awarded the Championship Gold Medal and diploma for the best beer on show at the British Empire and Commonwealth competition. Like all Farsons Ales, Blue Label is part of the country's heritage. Blue Label has been a key part of Farsons' success over the past seventy years.

Specialities

» FARSONS LACTO MILK STOUT (ABV 3.8%)

Brewed according to the original 1946 recipe, and praised by beer gurus like Michael Jackson and Alan Marshall, this beer has quite a reputation. At EBC450 this is one of the world's darkest beers. It pours very black with an espresso coloured head. It is creamy, yet not cloyingly sweet. The mouthful is well rounded and lightly toasted. The finish is velvety with low bitterness. As Michael Jackson said, "we're luxuriating in deep waters here".

In response to requests from the United Kingdom and the United States, the Farsons brewery has revamped the brand's livery and image, but has been careful to retain the identical characteristics, ingredients and brewing process that have given the Farsons Lacto Milk Stout such an international reputation.

» FARSONS TRADITIONAL SHANDY (ABV 2.2%)

Farsons Traditional Shandy is ideal for people who enjoy a tinge of sweetness added to the bitterness of beer. It is a mix of ale-based beer and lemonade, and with an alcohol level of 2.2%, it makes a very refreshing beverage.

» FARSONS SHANDY LAGER & LIME (ABV 2.2%)

The Farsons Shandy Lager & Lime is the newest addition to the Farsons Shandy range. It retains all the flavour of the traditional Farsons Shandy but the hoppiness found in the ale-based version is replaced by a zesty lime flavour.
