Farsons teams up with 'Saving Rinu' campaign 6/22/2004

As part of its social responsibility commitment, Simonds Farsons Cisk plc is supporting the summer campaign for the protection of the seabed coordinated by the Malta Environment and Planning Authority (MEPA).  This project, which was launched to mark the World Environment Day, has been initiated by the United Nations Environment Programme entitled ‘Wanted! Seas and Oceans: Dead or Alive?’, to highlight the various threats to marine life.

“Farsons has always nurtured the values of protecting the environment in Malta.  MEPA’s initiative in collaboration with the United Nations Environment Programme has given us another opportunity to prove our commitment to environmental protection, in this occasion, the marine life,” said Mr Anthony J Tabone, Deputy to Group Chief Executive – Marketing at Simonds Farsons Cisk plc., when presenting the sponsorship cheque to MEPA Chairman Mr Andrew Calleja.

For this summer campaign, MEPA has created the character of ‘Rinu’ in a 2D animated video production. The story is centered around Rinu, a little fish living off Gnejna Bay. Together with his friends Rea and Matti, they enjoy a carefree life until their very existence is threatened by humans. The animated cartoon series is currently being screened three times daily on PBS.

MEPA Marketing Executive, Peter Gingell, said: “With our slogan ‘Let’s not drown in litter!’ we are generating an interest on what is happening to our seas and the importance of protecting the underwater species from becoming extinct. This year MEPA is promoting Marine Protected Areas to ensure the safeguarding of a multitude of creatures.”

This environmental initiative has also the support of the Ministry for Rural Affairs and the Environment, Malta Resource Authority, Water Services Corporation, the Public Services Corporation, Bank of Valletta and SAS Radisson Baypoint. www.mepa.org.mt
